Blog Response #11

Each novel has a setting or multiple settings.  How does your author create images of the setting?  If you had to describe the time/place of when your novel takes place, how would you do this?  Does the author use the setting to help develop the plot in your book?  What particular images does the author create that are memorable?  Is there a particular scene you can visualize, and why is this image so vivid?

**In response to the blogs, try to make connections with your novel's setting.  How is your setting similar to that of other books?

  1. I read the book Prisoner B-3087 and this book takes place in a lot of different settings. Alan Gratz does a great job of showing the different concentration camps and using descriptive words. My novel takes place in the 1940s during world war two. I know this because of the back ground knowledge. The author does use the setting to help the plot. One of the places that i see this is when they go on the death marches. Some images are the sells of the burning people and how people re frozen to the ground.

    6. The author in your book really made the story gruesome. He talks about how the body would re freeze to the ground which sounds really gross. i would not want to smell the burning bodies. Does he also describe in the book how they would smell?

  2. My author creates an image for the setting by using very descriptive words. I would do the same thing to describe the setting because because it seems like it is the only way to do it for my book, "Football Champ". In my book the setting is very important because otherwise you have no idea what is happening. It is because there are so many settings. The particular image I can picture is when Troy is in the owners box of the Falcons stadium with the headset on trying to read the Seahawks offense. It is so vivid because I have watched so many football games and seen this view before.

  6. I read the book Kiplings choice and this book has a few settings. One setting is out in the battle field of world war one. The author makes it clear by explaining the the gas masks that they receive. He also explains the roaring of the bullets flying past above them. The setting does help develop the plot in the book, otherwise the story would be missing important parts and not knowing why hes injured. So far the most memorable image is john laying on the ground getting thrown in the air when a bomb lands near him. He always talked about how he could see the cracks in the dirt from being so dry.

The basketball court it the 1st one, the author describes it as old with creepy squeaky floors and old wooden bleachers. The 2nd main place is at Rhino's (main character) house. He said he has a old fashion room with white stained carpet and very blue walls.

  9. the author in my book doesn't really go into detail about the setting but it feels like it is around the early 2000's when punk rock was popular but he uses the high school setting and uses the way people dress and the way they talk to decide the setting and time period. one thing that he helps visualize is just the way people talk and the things they wear but he really goes into detail about how the characters act and look and speak

  11. Im reading Outpost and the author does a really good job does a really good job describing the setting. He decribes the surrounding area like how the forsest look cozy from outside of it but as you enter it it becomes more erie because it becomes darker and darker and is coerd in thorn bushes protecting the inside boarders. Or of the outpost how its ontop of a hill and can clearly see for miles protcting every feild and have a vantage point from any attack. Or how the town has a warm home feeling inside the big walls where everyting is lively like nothing bad is going on and does a great job decribing the warm colors of the buildings and the weather at a spacific time. He does a really good job creating a plot with the details and i can clealy visually see the freaks and just about ever scene of the book as im there with the charachters at the moment.

I can describe the time and place of the book with my details the author gives me. He talks about the Germans taking over and by using my knowledge from history class this would be in WWII. The author likes to describe the setting very well. He talks about everything around him in the area and not just in front of him. I can almost visualize the scene where they are waiting for their ration cards and there would be snipers just shooting at them. This moment would be so terrifying and it would make me not want to wait in line.

  13. In my the author does a really good job using descriptive detail to make it easier to visualize the book. He makes it seem like it takes place in the 1900's because they used horses for mostly every thing but when Will and Denny's dad came and picked Will up from Doc Siddlers he brought there farm truck. In the book a particular scene i can visualize is when Will is at the rodeo and he is riding the bucking bulls and gets thrown off. He really uses descriptive words and makes you really feel like you are in the book.

  15. The setting that is set up in my book, A Thousand Acres, is farmland. The novel is set up in Iowa and it talks about the different fields that are around. Most of them contain corn as well. The author creates images in the setting by using very precise words. The way the author wrote describes about how the men are expected to be in the fields and provide for the families rather than the women, who are expected to stay home and work. The women also are expected to help the men on the farm. Which shows that this novel takes place in 1979. The setting helps develop the plot due to the father having to split up all of his farmland to his daughters. So far the most memorable part is when everyone in the family is arguing in the room. I can imagine it really well because of the descriptive words and actions.

In my book Football Champ there are many settings in the book. The kid named Tony is the play caller for the NFL falcons. The setting takes place in the falcons football stadium and him calling the plays. Then the other place he is at his school with the football team and trying to make the team to continue his career to the NFL. 17. in the book the dark tower, the author creates the setting to seem like an old western story. i would describe it as like an old western movie because its mostly desert and mountains. the author does use the setting in the book because the main characters have to travel through the desert and climb mountains to catch up to the man in black. some images in this book are very memorable because at certain points of the book, i can picture what is happening. the easiest part to picture was when the gunslinger was climbing the mountain while he was only about 20 feet down from the man in black. this is the most vivid part because that was the moment that he was so close to what he has been trying to catch throughout the whole book.

Tim Tebow creates images by using very descriptive words and everything he says he has done, so he has a story behind everything he says. The time and place of this book was probably 2015-2016 because thats when his career finished and he wrote all about his career. 31. I am reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Because it covers multiple decades in its timeline, there are multiple settings created in the book. It takes place back in the late 1700's/1800's Yorkshire where women wore dresses and there were maids and slaves. This time was very old-fashioned and creates a gothic feel while reading. Emily Bronte describes the settings through descriptive sentences and lots of dialogue. You are able to visualize everything from the fields and farm to the darkness of Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. When the characters faces and clothing are described, I can easily picture them in my head. I can remember Catherine coming home from the Grange very vividly for Heathcliff poor hygiene and dark tear streamed face.

  35. I finished reading Boot Camp and the setting was dark almost as if you were in a jail cell. The author described the concrete walls being cold and hard. The food was soggy with no taste. Sounds like the way someone would discribe Jail don't you think? the time period could be present day because of the way that the boot camp had sensers and motion detectors. The image I really come into mind is the way the author discribes TI. I picture a room with all concrete walls with a light in the middle and a little darker color in the concrete from the way that people had to lay there in the punishment of there actions. For the most part the author had a great discription of the life that boot camp looked like.

The author does not say if it is day or night because he is in a cell most of the time. He just tells time based on feedings. Also, the author adds dates to tell what day it was. I can imagine what the Alcatraz prison looked like because he described the 4x9 foot box and had a map drawn by a former prisoner.

    1. My author also described the characters very well i feel like a little to much but i knew everything descriptively about each character now, my book is not a true story at least i hope were not genetically making humans, but my author gave little detail about the scene/setting but enough to know whats all going on.

  38. in my book Far From The Tree there are multiple settings one for each character in the book. the setting changes every chapter within the book. it goes around with each characters life and whats going on. if i could change the setting in the book i would just leave it as it is. how they make it as you are part of each of the kids life is easy to understand. but the jumping back and forth from each kid is hard to understand and would change that.

    1. My book relates with this because the setting changes multiple times. The main character Adeline switches to many schools and her family also moves a lot, that sometimes it gets confusing because it's not till later that she mentions who stayed back. Although, the author does described the settings pretty well, it helps me imagine how things might look like.

  39. Im reading the book Among The Hidden, the setting is Luke lives with his parents and two brother in a house somewhere in the woods. Then all of a sudden the government wanted the land and what the government wants the government gets. The author creates a memory of the woods and what they used to be and how much they meant to Luke. Because the author describes very well how the woods looks and feels.

  40. in my book Brians winter the author gary paulsen does a very good job of describing the setting. the book takes place in a remote forest in canada. the most memorable part of the setting is when he describes the lake he does a good job in describing the vegetation that grows around it and how the lake has a distinct shape to it.

  41. I read the book "Falling Leaves" A memoir by Adeline Yen Mah. A setting that I visualized is when Adeline's family moved to Tianjin and she had to attend a new school, but got lost trying to walk back home after school. As she was walking she didn't know what way to take so she just followed the sidewalk she was on and that took her to the city. When she got in the city she was shocked and memorized by the streetlights, variety of different flashing colors, tall beautiful buildings, the buzzing noise of cars and people. Adeline's parents have strict rules and one of them is that after school the kids can't go nowhere outside of the house unless approved by them. So therefor she was shocked by how the city look like and so she took that chance to admire this one moment. The book has many settings but the reason I chose this one is because everyone knows how a city looks like and depending where you are some places can be pretty shocking to look at.

  42. I am reading the book "Far from the Tree" my author creates the same setting in 3 different persons eyes so he uses many different ways to describe the setting. In one part of the book when Grace and Maya were meeting Joaquin for the first time, Grace's description of the art gallery was beautiful and magical but Maya's was to mush going on her eyes couldn't focus. I would probably connect with Grace's description more than Maya's so i would use all of the colors that popped out to me and the different shapes and sizes of everything. Yes very much so because the main plot id finding family. The image when they were at the art gallery was very vivid to me because it was the first time all 3 kids were finally in one room and see each other all together. It also described how much they all look a like and that gave a better and bigger picture in my head.

  43. I read the book River. The book was based off of out in the wilderness at L shaped lake. The lake was an actully and L and it was out in the wilderness where the lake was calm and nobody bothered them. Gary is very discriptive and that really helps me read the book because i can understand it alot better. The story takes place on L lake and they like the lake because everything is calm.Yes Derek gets stuck by lighting and he was in a come so Bryan had to take Derek 119 miles down rive to a trading post to get help. The images that Gary represents it shows what is happening and is very easy to relate. I really think this is a good book for someone in this class because Gary is a good author and is very discriptive

  44. I'm reading the book The Forgetting and this setting takes place in a town called Canaan. It is on another planet and the author does a great job of describing the place they are at. She describes the town of Canaan, the the world outside of the walls, and the caves leading throughout the town and outside world. I think the description of the setting helps develop the plot because it helps you understand what is going on with everything. The cave that they find outside of the walls I think is the most descriptive part of the book because it goes into details very deep and tells you all about the different technology in the cave.

  45. I'm reading Monument 14 and setting is everything in this book. The kids are stuck in a greenway mart which is coincidentally right next to a chemical compound facility. Becuase of this they are affected heavily by the compound. It also in the future so technology also plays a part in the book and how the chemicals are made.
