Conflict--Every book has some sort of conflict that pulls the reader in and keeps the reader reading.  Conflict can be person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. self, person vs. society, or person vs. the supernatural.  Identify the primary conflict in your novel.  Who or what is involved with the main conflict?  What is the conflict?  How does your character handle himself/herself when faced with this conflict?  How does this conflict add to the story line of your novel?  How is the conflict resolved and what is the outcome?

  1. In my book "This is the Day" by Tim Tebow there are many different conflicts throughout the book. The biggest one i think is person to self. The reason i think that is because the book is all about the struggleand what he had to go through to get to where he is now. One of the things that he says is "we get knocked down, but we are not destroyed". He is constantly talking about how his body is always tired and he just feels emotionally drained but he always had to push himself to keep going. I think the conflict here is just life and how hard your willing to work to get what you want. Tim Tebow handles himself great when he faces a conflict. He is always thinking about the positive side and he always stays motivated. I think the conflict basically is the story line because without the hard work and the things that sucked, then he wouldnt be where he is today.

  3. So far in my book outpost the conflict is between the town and these monsters they call freaks. Earlier in the book they went out to plant food so that they have food to eat throughout the winter. About a week later when they went out to start pulling weeds the freaks ripped out all of the seeds and cut the heads off of 6 of there dead and stuck them to the post. The gaurds and the main charachter have relized there becoming smarter then they thought but have to protect the feilds from the freaks. The main charchter Deuce has volunteered to watch the feilds full time and abunch of others. It keeps you reading because the freaks are known to kill the humans and attack and there having abunch of weird encounters with the freaks while there building there outpost.

  4. I am reading "The River" by gary paulsen. The conflict in this book is person vs nature and you could argue that it could also be person vs person. The person vs nature conflict is that nature is fighting Brian and Derek. At one point the mosquitoes in the tent were super terrible and they could not stand sleeping in the tent. Another time Brian was standing on a dirt ledge and it gave away but when he fell, he fell on flint rock so they can now make fire. With fire it creates smoke which repels mosquitoes. The person vs person conflict was when Brian and Derek got to the lake and Brian said that he would not go out if they brought the gear on the lake because it would defeat the purpose of their survival course. So the only thing they brought was the radio just in case someone would get terribly hurt.

  5. I am currently reading the book Finding Zasha. There are many of conflicts throughout the book and the main one from the start was the war was coming to their town. They had to leave to get away from all the bombings and not enough food. This conflict would be man vs Society because it is all of Germany. The second conflict right now is when Ivan gets talked to by one of the German officials and he wants him to come in a play music for them. He doesn't know how long he will be away from his family. This conflict would be man vs. man because it is between Ivan and Axel. These conflicts are hard on Ivan but he takes them like a champ. He never gets nervous and he always handles it like hes been in the situation before.

Some of the conflicts are that they have to face is while Will and Denny are out riding in the mountains and Denny gets bit by a rattle snake and Will has to try to get the snake from wrapped around him. After getting the snake off him they go off riding to the rodeo and Denny's bite gets infected and they are trying to find a clean spring to wash it out with so they could wrap it up. One of the nights while outside camping in the woods there is a rain and hail storm and they have to cross a river and the river is so high and the water is moving so fast Denny falls off and almost drowns. One thing that is involved is food him not having enough food and almost starving to death is a conflict he has to face. 11. I am reading Wuthering Heights and there many many conflicts. Mr. Lockwood faced a person vs. paranormal in the beginning when he stayed at Wuthering Heights. He was stuck staying there because of the snow storm, a person vs. weather conflict. The main conflict so far is person vs. person. The characters like Hindley, Heathcliff, Catherine, and Nelly are constantly getting into fights and finding trouble between one another. This main struggle has led to Heathcliff's disappearance and Hindley's alcoholism after Frances's death. They are not one big happy family and it is creating lots of conflicts. This main conflict is the whole backbone of the novel, besides Catherine's person vs. self struggle, choosing who she should marry.

  12. In the book, A Thousand Acres, there is a main conflict that is going on. The father Larry is wanting to split up his land to his 3 daughters and give them 33% of the land. The youngest daughter wants nothing to do with it though. She doesnt want all the drama that would be involved in dividing it up. So far there is no solution to the problem and the main character, GInny doesnt really react to it much because they are not making such a big deal about it yet. I hope the problem gets resolved soon, but it also is what is making up the whole story so far.

The reporter makes him sound bad and now everyone thinks the Atlanta Falcons are using him to cheat. Also Seth Halloway is called a "juicer" because he takes a vitamin shot that the reporter says is steroids. They both handle the conflict by not talking to anyone else in the press and staying very hidden and quiet. Without the conflict their is no story. I do not know the outcome of the story yet. He is at war in Germany and there are medics discussing what they should do with john because he is severely injured. They thought about saving him or throwing him in the ditch. They decided to throw him in the ditch, and later he wakes up to the same medic dead next to him. My character really doesn't really have any conflict because he cant speak. Throughout the story he tries to talk but cant because his jaw is gone, but the text shows emotions that he wants to say in his head. I think John wants to be saved but everyone thats looked at him say hes to far gone. This conflict adds to the story because i fell like someone is going to walk by and decide to save him.

The conflict that Moritz the main character has is that he is in a gang and wants to participate but his morals are better than that and he could not steal something from someone. This book is a person vs society and person vs self. Because the war is a conflict against another society and that sort of thing. Its person vs self because he tries to figure out what to do because it always seems like he has at least 2 options and they could always get in trouble for either of them. Part of the conflict is he turns the gang that he is in and the Kaiser is defeated so the conflict in society is over.

  34. I am reading the book Football Champ. The main character is facing a big challenge, of being a super young kid that is calling plays on a NFL football team. All the other teams are making fun of him and saying he's to young for what he is doing. Then he is trying to get on a NFL football team to play for real and stop helping the team out on the sideline. He is blocking everyone out that is saying that he is not going to make it and just keep pushing.

  35. I'm reading the book A Dogs Journey by W. Bruce Cameron. the biggest conflict in the book is between Gloria and Clarity mostly because of the dog Molly. The conflict is mostly because clarity wants Molly and her mom Gloria doesn't want anything to do with a dog. Clarity made some crazy decisions that may not have been the best but her mom also i feel was a little to dramatic person an took this out of proportion. After fighting and going to court she is easing up a little.

  37. I am reading the book Dirt Road Home by Watt Key and the conflict is mostly person vs. society. I say that because the conflict is Hal being in jail. Hal is just trying to keep to himself and do his time and get out, but the two gangs that are trying to get him to join them are making it very hard to do so because they keep threatening him. When he ignores the threats, they are followed by him being beaten up. He keeps having meetings with his dad who is saying that he will be out very soon, so he must just keep powering through.

  38. I read Boot Camp and the biggest conflict in the book is person vs society. The main character Garrett has to face the people at the camp and his family for putting him there. The biggest problem Garrett is facing is the way Boot Camp is ran. He is facing the new rules and the staff at boot camp. He is at the lowest level and is ways trying to be the smart guy. I read the entire book and the ending is radical. You have too read it.

    1. My book is somewhat like that brave new world heard of it? its a good book but there are rules in this book that people don't like to follow even at the highest level or class.

    2. The main characters in my book also face a person versus society conflict. They are constantly on the run so they don't get discovered and become outcasts compared to the rest of society.

  39. I am reading the book brave new world theirs really no conflict but just a little drama like high school drama but with adults. The book i feel like is more about class like Alpha, Beta, delta, gamma and epsilon now even in the same class they judge each other which could be who has had sex more with others or even what they looks like they make fun of this alpha which his name is Bernard hes short and i guess ugly but still wants to do the nasty's with him and that is all the tea so far which is the most important to share.

    1. The book that I am reading I can tell that your character Bernard and my character Adeline are facing the same struggle a little bit. Adeline's stepmother who is called Niang, makes fun of her and calls her ugly and stupid. Although Adeline never pays much attention to her looks the words Niang tells her doesn't affect her but they still hurt. Adeline tries to stay positive because she knows someday in the future she's going to become successful even with Niang trying to bring her down.

  40. In the book Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment the conflict is both person versus society and person versus person. The kids are against society in the fact that they are hiding their wings and powers from the rest of society. The kids are also fighting the corrupt laboratories that gave them their powers. The main characters deal with these conflicts by being constantly on the run and by not building connections with anyone. It gives them a reason to stick together rather than just live out their lives on their own.

  41. In my book Monument 14 the biggest struggle would be society v.s. society. The reason this is the biggest conflict is because an earthquake destroyed a norad facility and leaked compounds out into the air. The compounds make for some very dangerous situations whether you turn into a raging killer, psychotic, or blister up and die. I think my characters do a good job handling themselves and treating their symptoms the way they should.

    1. WOW! This book seems like a very interesting read, i like that kind of stuff it reminds me of this show on Netflix called Daybreak were these facility's explode or something like that and turns all these parents into like zombies and the kids are left unaffected, but it seems like a good book with a lot a drama and seems like its not boring.

  42. I am reading Captured by Alvin Townley. The conflict is person vs self between the main character and his sanity. The main character gets Captured by North Vietnam and tortured. When Jerry gets sent to a dark room away form the other prisoners he begins to lose it. He started to talk to a beam of light and started to have a mental breakdown. He got threw this by staying true to a Code of Conduct. Every military personnel must learn the Code of Conduct because if they get captured they cannot say anything that would break theses rules. Jerry just thought about the rules to focus his mind on something. This conflict adds to the story because it shows what Jerry went through, not just physically but mentally as well. The conflict is ongoing from Jerry being in solitary to him getting tortured.

  43. I am reading the book "Falling Leaves" and the main character who is Adeline is having conflict with her family. Two of her siblings bully her to show who's in charge and her stepmother is making Adeline look like a bad child in front of her dad's eyes. Adeline has had handle the abuse from her stepmother pretty maturely, she obeys and stays quiet. But the thing is that she doesn't defend herself she basically submits to her stepmother's authority. Niang who is the stepmother likes to control and have power over people, even the husband is so blinded by Niang's manipulation that he fails to realize how his own children are being affected negatively by this. Even as a grown up Adeline's parents still manage to control her life in some way and this conflict still hasn't been solved.

  44. im reading the book Among The Hidden and the main conflict in my book is person vs. society because Luke is an illegal 3rd child. And he is not allowed to interact with anyone outside of his house and the only other human being he has seen besides his family was a homeless man on their doorstep begging for food. The conflict of not being able to be seen by others has no been resolved in the book so far.

  45. I'm reading the book Far From the Tree and i think the biggest conflict in this book has to deal with Grace. It is defiantly person vs. self because she is a high school junior that got pregnant and is just now meeting her 2 siblings she didn't know she had. Grace handles this problem by hiding it from her "new" siblings and avoiding all topics on the ex-boyfriend. This conflict adds a lot to the storing line because it can be repeatable.

  46. in the book Foxman the conflict is person vs nature. because Carl and his cousin are lost and true to survive in the woods. and while dealing with dangerous animals and to survive the elements. carl handles himself well he is scared only cause he has never been in this situation before. and the whole story is based on him trying to find his way home so thats why it effects the novel.

  47. In the book The Forgetting, the conflict is between the main character and the council. The main character, Nadia, doesn't forget anything where as almost all of the rest of the town forgets everything they know. She just figured out how everyone is forgetting everything and now she is trying to stop it. Nadia faces this situation by trying to find out how the forgetting happens and then stop it. this conflict is the entire plot of this story. I think Nadia will find a way to stop the forgetting from happening and she will save the city.
