Upon completion of reading your novel, what have you learned about a different culture? What shocked you? What seemed strange to you? What couldn't you believe? in the book I am Malala there country is vary different and had things different. like women not having equal right like men. a women was speaking up fro what she believed in and was killed. Malala had spoken up also an was shot in the left side of the head. Malala had the Taliban after her to kill her so women rights wouldn't come true. i cant believe that they kill someone just because they want something different. the culture they live in is not what i would want at all. specail how they handle things like hurting a women for equal rights.

DeleteIt would be very difficult to live in this type of a country. I think it is ridiculous that Malala got shot for just saying what she believed in because in our country, we are able to do so freely.

DeleteIn the book Night it was about the Holocaust so it is a well know topic but Elie showed it in a different light. Elie showed me that family is everything and to keep them around to help stay positive in your worst times. At the beginning of the book was probably the most shocking part to me because everyone in Sighet was so oblivious to everything going around them. The fact that they thought they were going to get lucky and the German soldiers were going to stay away for them and leave them be was shocking. The whole book was kinda strange to me because the way he described everything was really different and he jumped around a lot. I couldn't believe how much they moved around to different camps and different stops in the camps.

DeleteIn my book a long way gone the people in Ishmael's village are also like that because they dont think that the war is going to reach their village and they will be ok but it eventually does reach their village and lots of people die.
DeleteSome women in the novel, I Am Malala, are also oblivious to the way that they are treated. They dont even realize that they should be able to have a voice and do what they please, like getting an education. That is why when Malala started to voice her opinions, they began to realize and see that they can and should.

DeleteIn my book the main character Ishmael is a 13 year old kid who was forced to join the army because he needed food and the rebels killed his parents. The part that i could not really believe is the kids who do brown brown which is gunpowder and cocaine and smoke weed while these kids are not even out of school yet. These kids are also happy to be doing what they are doing because for most of them the rebels killed their families.

Deletei agree i was really shocked that even kids that are only 13 are doing drugs and are so addicted to them that when they stop they end up getting really sick. it would be so hard to just go out and be forced to join the army at such a young age and having to figure out who to trust and who not to trust. the book was really shocking and suprising overall.

DeleteA few things from The book Kite Runner that suprised me are the stoning of the people that commit adultry and the marrige and incest laws. The thing that suprised me is that two people were stoned to death because they cheated on someone and that is almost just an everyday thing around here as much as i hate to admit it. And it was explaining who this guy was going to marry and it said that the girl he was going to marry was his first cousin and it said that that is a common first choice to those people.
ReplyDeleteMy book is kind of like that because when kids get captured they either have to join the rebels or army or die because to the people in charge they area waist if they dont help them fight plus most of the kids family is dead so they do not have anywhere to go

DeleteI am also reading the kite runner and i agree its crazy how the government gets so involved in these personal matters. I think its terrible how one man is able to kill this couple by throwing stones. I feel so bad for anyone who is unable to escape like Amir was able to many years ago.

DeleteIn I Am Malala, the culture is completely different than ours. Women are the ones who are treated differently than the men, and they are limited in what they can and cant do. What was strange to me was that the women could not go outside without being accompanied by a male. I wonder what exactly the reason for this would be. I also learned what a burqa is. All the women had to wear them, but Malala refused to because she felt like she shouldn't have to and that she should be equal to the other men in her country. I honestly could not live in a country that doesn't see men and women at least halfway equal. I wouldnt be able to voice my opinions and thoughts.

DeleteMy book is basically what it was like as a jew during WWII. The thing that I couldn't believe the most was how much they were moved from camp to camp. I thought they just threw them in a camp and that was it. I found it strange how often the main character had survived selection. Overall, I have learned that this time was even worse for Jews than we thought. There is a lot more that went on in a concentration camp than we have been taught. There was definitely a lot of different emotions felt when reading this book. At some parts I felt angry, and at some I was just shocked. But it didn't give you anytime to feel sad cause the book moved so fast.
ReplyDeleteI agree that in all these books we were all surprised how a certain kind of group is hurt or prejudiced for how they lived. That really surprised me when reading through all these blogs.

DeleteMy book is kinda the same, your book they were moved around from camp to camp and in my book the boys have to keep running and hiding and keep running ti each village to try to find shelter to hide.
DeleteMy book was the opposite of fast pace. There were parts that I would be shocked and discussed but then it got slow where you could feel bad for Ishmael.
DeleteI learned from the kite runner how bad the whole country was run during this war and how the town once prospered and then quickly went downhill with the onset of war. Another thing that surprised me was how close everyone was how they would talk for a bit and be able to find some kind of relative and that really surprised me. I was shocked that they let just one power hungry man guide everyone in the Taliban who would kill you for fun if you did something wrong according to a religion and if you didn't practice that religion it was not a good outlook for you.

DeleteI agree that Afghanistan quickly went down hill when the Taliban came in and i also think it changed the way they see their own country. i think it will make them not want to go back to their county because they feel ashamed of who they are.
DeleteI am reading kite runner and i have learned alot. at first in my book i was confused about the kite part and how they would cut eachothers stings. At first i thought that they had to hit the kites down but then i figured out that they had glass or wire or something in the string which was the part that would cut the other peoples string. I learned that their culture is alot differnt than ours because of what they do and how they do it. They also didnt want to be seen practiceing their own religion

DeleteIn my book Kite Runner the culture is very unique and different than our culture. The thing that surprised me the most was the normal thing is to have more then one wife and this was very strange to me because in our culture that is cheating. Another thing that I thought was strange is that Baba paid for the wedding and in the USA the brides parents usually pay for the wedding. I also learned from this book that the bride will never see there family again, I thought this was also strange.

Deletein A Long way gone the culture was way different then ours. They lived in a different way and there homes ad communities were completely different. What i thought was surprising is that they have small homes and villages where people are spread out and no one really lives very close to each other. They also have food stands in most towns instead of restaurants. I think its neat how they all kinda live spread out but still know people in other villages.

DeleteIn the book kite runner, i noticed a lot of different things from their culture. They seem to treat women like they are saints. Before Amir and Soraya got married they weren't allowed to talk to each other. That seemed strange to me because they cant get to know each other before their married. Another thing that seemed different was how they have kite flying events.

DeleteIn the book Kite runner the main thing that shocked me was the plot line because everything came in a circle. The reason i belive this is because at the beginning of the book amir witnessed hassan getting raped and never did anything about it. Amir felt guilty for years until he went back home to see rahim and was sent on a journey to find hassans son and ended up adopting the boy. This taught amir many lessons and after he adopted the boy it made himself feel forgiven.

The things that shocked me was when she stood up for the women and never gave up even when things got rough. What seemed strange to me was why her dad wasn't treating her how every other father should in there country. i could never live how the women lived in there country they get treated like property and they cant do anything but have more baby's, make food, and clean.

It is disgusting and I just do not get it because they are going to die way before their wives and before their kids are grown up.

DeleteIn the book a long way gone. there culture is so much different than here in the US. They are all very poor. have little to no food and no clean water or clothes. they wear the same clothes all the time because they cant afford new ones or clean ones. it is very sad and would be so hard to live in a culture like this. they only really eat rice for food. Because when Ishmael came to the United States he thought all the American food was weird and he didn't like it because all he was used to eating was rice. i feel this culture would be really hard to live in and adapt to.

DeleteI Read the book Kite Runner and the culture is very different from ours.as soon as the Taliban took over and seeing how their country was before and after. Amir says how the buildings were almost completely demolished. Everything changed in a matter of seconds. If they left the town the taliban would find them and kill them if they didn't want to practice that religion. The book showed this as Hassan and Farzana were shot for staying in Baba's house. The town went from being prosperous to being the slums. As Amir described it kids were selling everything they had just to try and make some coin. In the United States we wouldn't do that. We let people practice their own religion and let them be free, over there they are not. i would not recommend their culture for anybody.
ReplyDeleteit was a good thing they got out of there when they did because that country fell apart very fast after they left. it waas already not very good when they were there the only thing amir did was fly his kite but it got much much worse.
DeleteMy book A Thousand Splendid Suns was also full of Taliban and sickening culture. It contained buildings being destroyed and many similar killings. I also would not recommend this culture to anyone who likes freedom and safety.

DeleteThey want to have boys because they want someone to carry on the family name. If they have a baby girl the father could care less about it and will usually assault his wife for giving him a daughter.
DeleteI read the book Night and its all about the Holocaust and the Jewish culture. It shows another side of the Holocaust from one of the survivors. One of the craziest things is that Elie met Josef Menegle who is the Angel of Death and one of the most famous people of the Holocaust.

The most unbelievable difference is how a girls parents get to pick who their daughters marry and what age they get married. Mariam was forced to get married at age 14 to Rasheed. How could her parents make her get married at such a young age. They only get married so the man can get a child to carry on their name. which is another thing. the guys need baby boys to carry on their names. Its a very diffrent place to live then ameica.

ReplyDeleteafter finishing the book night i have learned that the Jews have been through a lot and they have lots of scars. and many died and couldn't make it through this weather they lost there faith, or died because of it. what shocked me was how terrible they really had it an how terrible the camps were. like the details of the hangings and the fun killings it was the worst. what was strange to me was how they even took the gold out of there teeth for money i didn't realize they were that desperate. i couldn't believe how they hung little kids for fun. all in all it was a great book with a somewhat happy ending.
I agree it was a good book just the details of what they all went through at the camps its just so sad to think bout and i wonder why nobody knew about what was happening sooner so they could escape and maybe get rescued sooner.
DeleteAfter finishing my book Night, i realized how much all the Jews endured in the camps and the horrible experience that they had. It kinda shocked me how long Elie and his dad lived and how they continued to get past selections. The image of the burning chimneys and the smell of hair and burning flesh is etched in my head. I think that the Germans where very cruel to the Jews and they dehumanized them and treated them like nothing but their work slaves.The trowing of the babies in the air and using them as target practice that is just unbelievable how someone can do that to a fellow human, its just like abortion is basically what it is and it is just so wrong and horrible murder.
ReplyDeleteI read a long way gone and I was very surprised by the fact that about how messed up Ishmael got from his time as a soldier. The fact that Ishmael was encouraged to do drugs and kill is messed up. He snorted brown-brown which was a mix up gunpowder and cocaine and sat around all day smoking pot. I was also shocked by the one guy being blown up by an R.P.G. and exploding into what was described as a red mist. I don't think I could handle the trauma that Ishmael had to endure.

DeleteI read the book night and it showed a lot about how the Germans hated the Jewish culture. It put you in the shoes of a Jewish person in a concentration camp in world war 2. What I mainly could not believe is what the Jews had to go through in the concentration camps. We have been taught some about what went in, but this book went way more into depth. One thing that surprised me was how much they moved camps. I thought you just got sent to a camp and you lived or got killed. Another thing that I had mixed feelings about was the daily life in the camps and all the frequent selections that they had to make it through. I personally can not believe that other countries apparently had no idea about the camps and had taken no action to stop what was going on.

ReplyDeleteI read the book A Long Way Gone and there was a lot of things that shocked me about it. The culture over there is very different. there is no army to help them when they are in the war. There was many things that shocked me from the way the rebels just killed everyone and didn't care and how young the kids were when they go into war. I also couldn't believe that these kids had to live the rest of there life with trauma and just having to deal with what they saw. I felt like it was a good book very graphic but that the part that made it good. Other then that it was good.

Deletei couldnt beilieve that the rebels would kill innocent women men and children. i cant believe how they slaughtered so many innocent people when their problem was with higher up people and not the innocent villagers.

DeleteIn the book I am Malala, it takes place in Swat Valley, Pakistan. The culture there is very different from here in the U.S. In Pakistan, the women are treated very poorly. The women are not able to go to school or go outside without a man. Something that shocked me was that the Taliban was so cruel to the innocent people. I thought it was weird that any women that wanted to go outside had to have a man with them. I couldn't believe that the Taliban would put dead bodies in the middle of town. Overall the Taliban were a lot worse than I thought they were.
ReplyDeleteyour book has some similarities that mine had like women were treated poorly. but in my book that they had a few women that would walk around with no man around and would wear make up. the ones that walked around would make the other ones jealous and want to have that freedom.

Deleteto me, how i want to be a history teacher i already knew a lot about the culture in my book but i was shocked by the brutality of it and the holidays. i read Thousand Splendid Suns and i knew a lot about afghan culture already but i did learn more about the holidays. but what shocked me was how many different type of afghans there really are. yet they dont to seem to be that racists to each other witch is one of the only things they have that america dose not.

Deletein the book a thousand splendid suns, there is so many things that is cant believe that have happened to someone. she just wanted to have her father in her life some more but it all turned around. she got her wish and lived with him for a while till he arranged her wedding and never got to see him ever again. her husband was a bad guy and would beat her. all around the world you know or heard of people getting beaten and nothing really happening. this book shows you what the life of someone that has do go through this stuff is like.

DeleteI am reading the book night and damn this book is short but it hits hard and if you never cry im pretty sure you would just because how he describes his experience. He started out with faith and hope and slowly got crushed he lost all faith and religion he was practically broken and lost everything. I was shocked just after chapter one when they started to kill infants are you serious? you must be really brain washed and delusional and Elie seeing that must have been horrific and that will stick for the rest of his life all his experience will stick. The thing that struck me the most was near the end of this book this child was getting hung and when they kicked the chair he was fighting he was between life and death and still breathing and he was hanging there for 30 mins and that is when i started to tear up because i just couldn't even imagine.

DeleteI'm reading the book Long Way Gone and what I have realized bout different cultures is that most of them don't have the same opportunities that we do. what shocked me is the there was for a while no government to stop these raids and these killings that were mostly being committed by little boys. It seem kind if strange that most of these boys couldn't even drive and there are smoking weed and snorting coke. That these kids are given AK-47s, bayonets, and grenades and they are sent off to kill and raid. I couldn't believe that the lieutenant held a competition that Ishmael and some other boys slit prisoners throats and whichever one bleeds out first wins. I feel bad or Ishmael that he had to grow up into such a bad environment, forced to join the war and kill people.

Deletei read a long way gone which is all about a 15 year old kid named Ishmael stuck in the middle of a war. he is trying to escape to safety but is caught to fight in the war. he killed his first man and couldn't stop. this shocked me because i didn't know how a 15 year old kid could kill people and like it. the Lt and corporal get Ishmael and the other child soldiers hooked on marijuana, cocaine, and "brown Brown". i was shocked of this because how could a grown adult have the heart to give children from the ages of 7 to 16 an addiction to drugs. the UN showed up one day and Ishmael and the other younger kids are let go to rehab. during rehab Ishmael was as bad as he was in the war. raising complete hell. at one point him and one other kid slaughtered a whole village with their bare hands which really shocked me. this shocked me because i didn't know a 16 year old kid could have the heart and strength to kill a whole village with his bare hands. during rehab he was selected to be a delegate for the kids that were in the war and was sent to new york to talk about his experiences. he then came back and moved in with his uncle. he returned to only escape the war but to have the war find him once again. he realized he needed to get out so he fled the country as a war refugee.
ReplyDeletei read the book the kite runner and i learned that the Afghan culture can be dangerous for everyone. the thing that shocked me the most was when Assef joined the Taliban. i knew he was a bad person but i didnt think he was that bad of a person. One thing that seemed strange to me was when Assef raped Hassan. it was probably the weirdest thing that happened in this book. i couldnt believe that Amir was actually able to adopt Sohrab.
ReplyDeleteIn kite runner I learned that that culture is ether rich or poor there's not a medium. it was weird how they had guards everywhere they went. they had to be careful around then so they didn't get shoot or killed. like when baba had to talk to the guards before they went somewhere. I learned that the USA is layed back more then Afghanistan. I really didn't like this book because it was hard to understand. it was hard to keep focus reading it. I wood like to have guards everywhere I got I wood just like to be free and do what I want to do.
ReplyDeleteReading A Thousand Splendid Suns taught me a lot about the cruel culture of Afghanistan during that time. I did not understand the violence was to the extent it was. Innocent children and families getting blown apart in their hometown was not what I imagined to be going on in the 90's. I also did not fully understand how hard an arranged marriage could be on women. I was shocked by the amount of abuse and torture Mariam and Laila faced being married to their husband. Hearing about the lack of medication when the taliban took over made me horrified. How could they have no remorse for women and let them be cut open without anesthetic! The suffering women and children faced made me absolutely sick. I hope things are flipped in today's world and there is equality.
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you because when the Taliban took over they downgraded women, that I couldn't believe how someone could be so cruel to cause them pain and suffer, when they haven't even done anything to deserve that. I was shocked about the lack of medication because during the war a lot of people were getting sick and then they did the extreme of not allowing women to get treated.
Deletei finished the book night there is so much that shocked me like in the beginning the Nazi soldiers had all the houses on the block cleared out in like 3 hours. Also when they were throwing the dead bodies of the train at every stop the Nazi soldiers didn't even care they described it by throwing sacks of flour. I never know the Jews buried all there jewelry in the ground. the book night is a overall is a really good book.
ReplyDeleteI agree it was shocking how fast they cleared everyone in a whole town in 3 hours. I was confused why the buried there jewelry, did they think that they were going to be able to go back and get it? Yes the book was very good but some parts did get weird/confusing at times.
DeleteI am reading the book Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, the women in the book don't have a chose on marriage and today that would not be okay because the views on women have changed so much through out the years but some people still view women as a object or a "house wife". In the book people are either rich or poor there is no in between and if your poor you are only friends with poor people and if your rich you are only friends with rich people. Some thing that surprised me in the book is that Hassan got raped, and most people don't think that men can get raped too, it made me happy that someone actually talked about how that happens these days. I don't know what i would do if today's society was still like it was back then because it was insane.
ReplyDeletethe culture in my book is way different from what we have over here but one thing that shocked me the most is how they let this civil war break out and they are letting kids fight on both sides of the war. one thing that i thought was strange was the language barrier the names and the way they call certain objects are so different from us also the fact of what there wearing for cloths during the war they weren't wearing like actual cloths mean for war. one thing that i couldn't believe is just how they let the kids fight on both sides and let them suffer the consequences of war like the PTSD and stuff.
ReplyDeleteThroughout my novel A Thousand splendid suns there are many different cultures and how they think the world should work. I always saw this all lot when rashed hit his wives or how women had to have a berca on wen outside or the Islam where women have no rights. the strange think to me or at least what stud out was women not being able to work and I could not believe the brutality of some of the punishments raised come up with from locking his wife and child in a room and removed all light for days . I learned my life is good in comparison and the right to do what I want should not be taken for granted.
ReplyDeleteIn the book Night i have learned a lot about the polish culture. They have a lot off different traditions. I couldn't believe that the Nazis were just able to come in and take them like animals. Another thing i couldn't believe was how they were treated and how no one said anything about it.
ReplyDeleteI am reading the book A Long way gone and what I learned about Ishmael’s culture is that life in Africa is really different. One they only have electricity in bigger cities and many people in Sierra Leone never seen the big cities and the lights. What surprised me the most that they never heard about snow. What seemed strange to me is that Ishmael being 12 could walk over 20 miles to a neighboring village with no adult supervision. I learned that Sierra Leone had a civil war with many different groups that tried to over throw the government.
ReplyDeleteThe book that I read was "A thousand splendid suns" I was shocked to find out how they treated woman. In some families woman were treated fairly but in others it was horrible how they got treated. In the book it basically showed how the men were the top dogs and women were just there to please the husband, cook for them, clean for them, and have babies. The Taliban men downgraded women by not allowing them to go to school, not going outside alone or something bad will happen to them, and to obey the laws or there will be punishment. It's really weird to think about how their cultural made the girls marry older men which is disgusting to think about because some of them didn't even have a say in the matter. Although it was interesting reading about Mariam's and laila's culture and how both of them grew up differently in their household. For example Mariam's mom didn't allow her to go to school which prevented her from getting an education, while Laila's dad praised her about school and encourage her to study and learn many things.
