Blog Response #3

Stotan!, Chinese Handcuffs, Running Loose, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes all involve intense topics that add to the plot.  Talk about the point in which you became hooked into your book.  What did Chris Crutcher do to hook you? Describe any moment or moments in the book where you didn't want to put the book down.  What will you always remember about this book?

Comments

  1. The book I read was Running Loose. I got hooked on this book around chapter six when Louie stopped playing football because he thought that targeting the other players was wrong. I think Chris Crutcher got me hooked because he always showed suspension in the book and I always wanted to keep reading to find out what will happen next. I didn't want to put the book down when Louie is running track at the end and is fighting with Jasper. I will always remember the part where Becky pasted away in a car accident.

    2. I have the same thoughts with you, he added lots of suspension throughout the story and it just makes you want to keep reading. Our books are also very similar as they have people dying throughout them. You had Becky pass and we had Preston pass in Chinese Handcuffs. The whole part about when the people die I will always remember.

    4. i am reading Stotan and its kind of the same as that he is a teacher and he doesnt kid one kid and thinks he should change is whole career just because of that and i want to see what he does now because he likes teaching.

    5. i agree Chris Crutcher made the whole book suspenseful and made you want to keep reading. There were certain parts that made you feel like you were really in the scene and you could really visualize it. When Louie was going to quit the football team it made me want to keep reading to see if he would or what he would do next.

  2. There were many spots that I got hooked in Chinese Handcuffs. The part I got most into was when Dillon's brother Preston was going to commit suicide. He was saying so many weird things to Dillon leading up to this like "your gonna be walking home alone tonight Dillon unless you find someone on the way back". Hearing this was crazy to think because if you were in that situation what would you do.This was the point I didn't want to let the book down and it was almost the end of the class period. Chris Crutcher added so many suspenseful scenes throughout the book and meaning that it is about a high school kid we can relate to them. I will remember to never let go of your friends and to always stick with them.

  3. I am reading Running Loose, and I got hooked when Louie was talking about being at the cabin then went into that never happened because Becky's dead. I had to keep reading to see how she died and how Louie felt about it. I will always remember her character because she made Louie really happy and I liked reading about their relationship.

  5. the point where i became hooked in the book Chinese handcuffs was when Jen was trying to commit suicide. Chris Crutcher made me feel like Jen was actually going to jump. i thought Dillon was going to have to go through another suicide.i didn't want to put the book down when Dillon kept grabbing Jen so she didn't jump and she kept getting out of his grip so i was constantly thinking that Jen was actually going to jump off the light tower. i dont know if i will always remember this book because i have a bad memory but i do believe it is a really good book.

    1. i agree with you that is where i also got hooked i also thought Jen was going to jump because Dillon hurt his foot and he was exhausted.

    2. This part also shocked me a lot because Dillon didn't want to lose another friend. He lost his brother Preston and he didn't want to lose his other best friend. He did really describe in the book at this point when Jennifer was hanging on with Dillon that she has been out there right after a basketball game which would make her get hypothermia a lot quicker. So it adds lots of suspense and it makes you want to keep reading.

      Delete
    3. this point also kept me hooked because if Jennifer actually fell and died then Dillon would've experienced another suicide. It also had a lot of detail which made me visualize the story better when i was reading.

  6. In the book Running Loose, there are a few points in the book where i didn't want to quit reading. Some of these parts were in Chapter 12 when Becky gets in a car accident and Louie is going through hard times and it made me want to keep reading because i wanted to know how Louie felt and what he did and how he got through it. another part that kept me wanting to keep reading was in Chapter 14 when it was Becky's funeral and Louie was late for it because he went and had his own services at the scene of the accident. He put such good details in it and really elaborated in it that it made you feel like you were really in the scene. I will always remember how life isn't always easy and how you are going to have to face hard times in your life but you have to move on and get through it and make the best of the rest of your life.

  7. Although my book Stotan! involves intense and sad topics, it kept me interested throughout the novel. A point that got me hooked was the night of the winter dance. Stotan week was complete and the boring swim talk was on a break. Chris Crutcher kept me flipping the pages with the horrors of physical abuse, drugs, and violence the boys were facing. I read eagerly waiting to see what would happen when Norties dad threatened the boys with a gun. The house was full of heated anger and uncertainty but they made it out, later saving Nortie's beaten mom. I also did not want to put the book down when Nortie and his girlfriend were confronted by Marty and O'Brian on a date. Overall the book held many interesting events besides swimming and I will always remember the tight friendships the group held closely to.

    1. I also think that the dance was the most interesting part. It got me hooked as well. I feel like the abuse and struggles that they are going through is what is making them stronger and bringing them closer together. I also enjoy how this book is not just about swimming and manages to keep me interested.

    2. Sounds like a very eventful book. I don't like reading boring books and this seems interesting and my style, so maybe i'll have to read it.

    6. I agree with you on this part being the best just because it showed how well all the boys worked together to save their friend. Unfortunately the book has tough issues many people our age face so even though it as intriguing to read it also made me feel sad to know this actually happens.

  9. The spot that hooked me in stotan is the parts with Nortie in them. These parts are way more interesting then the rest of the book. Nortie talks about his dad beating him and his family. And the part where he hits a kid at the daycare he works at, so he runs away because he didnt know what else to do. The parts with Nortie are more intersting then the entire stoten week part.

    1. I also agree that Nortie kept the book interesting. Although it is sad what he goes through, it helped me want to continue reading. Without his intense moments, the book would just be about their boring swimming.

      Delete
    2. I think that Nortie is what has made this story begin to get interesting. Without him, the story wouldn't be as developed and suspenseful because most of those times are to do with him. I see Nortie as the person that holds everyone together because they all bond through what he is going through.

    3. my book was the same way in the begging i didn't want to keep reading because it was jumping around and i did not know what was going on but the more i read the more it started to make sense and now i understand a lot more and im very interested to see what is going to happen.

    4. I agree the parts with Nortie in it are very interesting. From the life that Nortie had to how he has overcome it. I also like the parts with Lion in it cause him and Nortie are the most interesting character in the book, that's my opinion.

    5. I agree with Cody. Norite is a very interesting character. He adds a lot of background info to the story with all the stuff going on with his dad. He also adds some suspense.

  10. in the book Chinese Handcuffs the point that i became hooked was when Jennifer was trying to commit suicide and Dillon was chasing her so she wouldn't commit suicide. Jennifer ran out of a tournament basketball game and Dillon ran out after her. Jennifer was running to a light house to jump off Dillon was determined to catch her and not let her jump in the chase Dillon hurt his ankle. Dillon told Jennifer if she went he was going too Jennifer decided not to jump and Dillon is going to help her get help. Chris Crutcher hooked me with suspense of suicide. i will always remember the suspense of the book and how i get put to the edge of my seat.

  11. In the book Stotan!, there was one part that when I started to read it, I got hooked instantly. It was once the winter formal was mentioned. During this part, we saw the outcome of the abuse from Nortie's dad and it causes you to feel sorry for him. This part made me not want to put the book down because I wanted to know what was going to happen next. After the dance, every event that followed, created more and more of a suspense. From going to the bar to talk to Long John, to going to his house to collect Nortie's personal belongings, things get violent and intense. Having the abuse and violence is what got me hooked and wanting to read more. I will always remember the way Nortie was treated and the effect on him that his father had. This book has changed into an interesting story that makes me want to read more.

    4. It did get really intense when the group went to Nortie's house to pack his stuff and then Nortie's dad pulled out a gun. I really thought he was going to shoot one of the guys and kill them but good thing he didn't. It is sad reading how Nortie and his mom get abuse when they didn't do anything to deserve that.

  16. I am reading the book Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and what grabbed me into the book was when Sarah was is the mental hospital. The book talks about why she was in there but doesn't give all the information but i am hoping it does at the end of the book. When Sarah was in the hospital the book didn't talk much about her and it focused on more of Eric. Eric sounds like hes wanting to better himself but still be friends with her.

Jen was at a basketball game and her best friend Dillion was there part way through the game she walked out and started running outside. Dillion ran after her and finally caught up to her before she jumped off a bridge and Jen found out her mom is pregnant and she wanted to end her life. Then Dillion asked her if she wanted her 2 sister to go through what she has had to go through and that Jen needs to be there to protect them and she had second thoughts and changed her mind about to kill herself.

    1. I agree that our stories don't speed up until close to the end of the book. Im kinda glad they have a fast ending though because it really makes you remember what happened. I feel like from what ive read from the other blogs that all our stories have some kind of suicide or suicide attempt. This really pulls you in because you feel bad for these characters. I hope in the end it all turns out all right but so far i dont see a happy ending being possible for my book.

Is was the part the hooked me cause that is when you got to learn about all the characters and what they did at school and how they are getting ready for Stotan week. 20. I am reading the book running loose and the part of the book that got me hooked was when louie quit football because lednecky wanted the team to take washington out of the game. This got me hooked because louie practiced and trained really hard all summer just to through it all away because the coach was not a good person. If i was louie i think that i might quit to because playing for someone that teaches that kind of stuff would not be someone i think that i could play for.

    3. I got hooked a little before when Louie quite the team. I got hooked when they made the plan to take out Washington. Just having a coach that would do that kind of stuff is upsetting. I agree that i would quite the team too, because who would want to play for someone that toxic.

  21. I became hooked as soon as Louie quit the football team mid game. It just became so intense. Everything was starting to get so much more interesting. Things like him quitting the team, and going to the cabin with Becky, and then everything else that happens without spoiling the story. Chris Crutcher used a very different style. He gave you some humor, and then out of nowhere smacks you with a serious issue. From there it gets super crazy. I will remember a lot of things about this book. I will remember how Crutcher wrote the story, and most the entire plot of the story. The way he hooked me was just crazy. Normally, I'm not one that is excited to read. But this book made me want to keep reading. This is definitely one of those books that you could read multiple times.

I couldn't put the book down when Louie was building up the big hit on the quarterback and when Louie and Becky went to the cabin together. I found myself laughing quite often during these parts of the book because of how much i could relate or even the cringe. but in between those moments the book seemed to be really dull yet that made the high moments feel like high moments.

  27. I am read running loose and was shocked at how Chris wrote the book. Lets say it was a wild ride. I was hooked from the beginning when he described boomer and the little town he grow up in. I loved the description of the school football field and how he made me feel like I was there watching the game. I was ticked off about the idea to kill Washington but was glad to see payback on boomer during the basketball game. I was shocked at the death of Becky and all because of crazy drivers. I didn't agree with the way that Louie handled it but i could understand the way he felt. My favorite part of the book was when Louie raced Washington and Washington told Louie he was his hero. That just put a spark into my head that one little deed can go a long ways. Do you agree?

  28. in running loose the part that Crutcher hooked me was before the last practice against Washington when the coach told them they were gonna hurt there best kid. this caught my attention because it started a conflict that is very true in today's society because sports basically makes high school and people want to win. and when i first heard this i instantly wanted to know what Louie would do. he ended up quitting the team and that is what i thought was best. so basically when he added this conflict it got my intention. and the thing about this book is how Becky who he hasn't been with much is staying by him like this its crazy i have no idea why she is sticking with him even tho she doesn't really know him. so thats what is huge to me

Also towards the end when Becky died. He made one chapter happy like nothing bad was going to happen then he kills Becky. The part that I wanted to keep reading was when Becky died, it was just so upsetting that I could not stop. I will remember that this book was the book that took an ugly twist at the end.

    1. Yes I agree. I had so many questions that I had to keep reading. I was glad that Louie had this parent and coach by his side. I don't know what Louie would have done if he didn't have anyone.

    2. i agree what Lednecky wanting to hurt Washington like that really caught my attention and got me hooked and then to top it off Becky got in a bad accident and died and that got me really hooked and not wanting to put it down ever.

  30. He really got my attention when he wrote about Sarah faking it all. I think that was the climax of the book because after that i remember being able to fly through the book and always SHOOK when i finished the chapter. That's also when we learn a lot more about her father and how hes a compete psycho. Im almost done with the book now because these last few chapters are flying by so fast. I will definitely remember how crazy and real he had made the characters in the book.

    1. I agree i love how crazy and real the book is that its unbelievable on how the characters are all portrayed. I love the amount of sass that each character has and leaves me shook every time they start to rumble.

  31. I am reading the book staying fat for Sarah Byrnes. The part that really hooked me and intrigued me was learning Sarah Byrnes was faking it all. She first admitted it to Eric and spilled all the tea that it was all fake the burns and not talking for the longest time and all that was all a sham, and then finding out she was in the psych ward because of her father Virgil was abusing her and how she really got the burns was because of her father. I love how Chris Crutcher made Sarah into who she is and it just adds more drama and lots of tea to the book and makes a way more interesting read.

    1. I agree. I love how strong he made Sarah even after everything shes been through. I only want the best for Sarah and now i hope Eric is able to get better. I love how he also is able to make the characters so real. Like when lemry describes her childhood and how she is able to compare it to how Sarah feels really hits deep and makes you feel as though you are there.

  33. Im reading the book staying fat for sarah brynes and he really got my attention when he started talking and getting into with sarah's dad and his abusive state. her dad would beat her and her mother. her father is the biggest pert of the book and is made of what the whole book is about. i think that if we didnt have her dad in the story it wouldnt be as interesting and as good as it is.

    1. Sarah's dad is a POS and for sure dose not deserve to live, they way he treated Sarah is pathetic and sickens me it kinda relates to this school were in you know West Dubuqe High School the amount of abuse i just gotten today can almost just nearly relate to Sarah's father Virgil.

    2. The book that i'm reading "Stotan" has similarities with your book too. Nortie is a character in my book that also get's abuse by his own father who beats him and his mother too. Which it's a sad case when somebody gets abused because later on that abuse will affect their daily lives.

  34. I never became hooked in my book it was mostly boring and confusing all the time. The only part that i kind of enjoyed was when Dillon puts Preston's ashes in the bikers gas tanks and puts them all over the bar and threatens the bikers with a gun. The only point when i couldn't put the book down was when Dillon was messing with the bikers. What i will always remember about this book is that it is sad and has a lot of rape, drugs and abuse.

    2. I agree with Mason. I think if you have a good understanding of what the book is about then its a great book for a high school student to read. Although some parts may be a little confusing, you just have to closely read it to get a better understanding.

  35. In the book "Stotan!" it does talk about some realistic topics that even to this day we still face in this world. The topics that it brings up are abuse, racism, and drugs. Which is pretty nice that the author didn't shy away from it because even though some adults don't like their kids reading stuff like that, I feel like it's totally okay because at some point these kids have to learn the truth about life and know the difference between what's good and bad. I got hooked in the story when it started explaining about Nortie's life and the abuse he has been suffering since he was a little kid. And now it has been escalating with jeff about his health making the whole group worry about him, wondering if he's going to be okay. I would always remember the characters of this book all of them were unique in their own way and i would also remember Max's words of wisdom.

  36. running loose the point where I didn't want to put my book down is when Becky died in the car crash. I couldn't imagine what louis feels like. the anger and freaking out and feeling like a dream. the nexted day going back to the crash area and hoping she's was there. then going to Becky funeral and freaking out and driving away. the moment that I will al ways remember about this book is when he freaked out at the funeral.

    1. I agree with the fact that i cant imagine how much it must feel like a dream to him and how much he must be going crazy inside knowing that the person he loved the most isn't coming back and he cant do anything to help that.

  37. I'm reading Staying fat For Sarah Brynes. I got hooked on a couple parts, but the part that hooked me the most was when she spoke to Eric for the first time since she has been there. Then from that point on the book got so interesting. also another point that got me hooked was knowing what her dad did to her an put her threw and wondering how she will escape him, knowing how crazy he is. i think Chris Crutcher got me hooked by making me think and wonder whats going to happen next. i will always remember from this book is that he was only staying fat for Sarah and there friendship.

  38. I'm reading Running Loose and Chris Crutcher really hooked me with the whole football talk because i love the sport of football and when a book talks about something i like that is when i'm hooked and actually want to read it. The main part in the book that hooked me was when the whole football thing happened with Washington and Boomer and Louie quieting the team. After Louie quite the team that was when i really wanted to keep reading to figure out what else was going to happen. One part i will always remember in this book was when Becky died in that car accident because i felt so bad for Louie and her family and friends that lost such a great person.

  39. I am reading Sotan. What really got me interested in the book was when Nortie got the worst beating. This really interested me because you could see the how much the characters really developed. This event brought Walker standing up to his brother in the bar and giving him a nice hard whack to the head. Nortie getting put in the hospital brought the boys to the brink of getting shot because they went to grab all of Norties stuff from his house to move him into Walkers. The main reason I will remember this part of the book is because it really shows how well Chris developed the characters over the time.

  40. Im reading Running loose. I decided that wanted to read this book because my friend told me to because he said it was really good when he read it last year. But then i started reading it and it really ended up being a really good book from the descriptions of characters and senerey. The one thing i dont really like about it though is the pace of the reading it went way too fasr.

Jennifer was running to a light house to jump off Dillon was determined to catch her and not let her jump in the chase Dillon hurt his ankle. Dillon told Jennifer if she went he was going too Jennifer decided not to jump and Dillon is going to help her get help. Chris Crutcher hooked me because he puts you out on a limb

  41. I'm reading the book Stotan! The part that got me interested in the book is when we find out about Nortie getting beat. I picked this part because it adds a whole another part of the story and makes the book worth reading. Another part that drew me in was when we find out about walkers life. I wonder what he did different than walker that he is a bad kid and walker isn't.

  42. The part in Stotan where i just wanted to keep reading and couldnt put the book down was when Nortie and his girlfriend were out on a date and they were being confronted by Marty O'Brian. I wanted to keep reading because i just felt so bad for Nortie and wanted him to somehow get revenge because he didnt deserve any of the beatings he got or any of the comments that were made to him and his girlfriend. Throughout the book ive just been waiting for something amazing to happen in Norties life because he deserves it and thats what makes me want to keep reading the book.
